Fans of Sci-Fi's sublime Battlestar Galactica can rest easy -- the series will live on beyond its upcoming fourth (and final) season in the form of a prequel series, Caprica. Set 50 years before the events of Battlestar, the prequel will give us a glimpse at the Cylon Wars as well as flesh out the history of the Adama family. A two hour pilot is currently being produced, with the hopes of it becoming a full-fledged series ala its older brother.
This project isn't particularly fresh news to fans of the series, but at least we finally have some confirmation that things are moving forward. We actually started hearing murmers of it during the creativity drought of the writer's strike. Since a treatment for the series was already written before the strike, Sci-Fi finally saw fit to do something with the property instead of letting it rot in development hell.
Given's Sci-Fi's pretty dismal schedule for the upcoming, I don't really think they can afford not to turn Caprica into a new series. Their other attempts at compelling hour-long shows haven't really met with success -- just look at Painkiller Jane and The Dresden Files. Eureka is admittedly fun, I give them that, but it's nowhere near the perfection of Battlestar Galactica.
Even if it doesn't get series status, I don't think Sci-Fi is going to quit milking the Battlestar franchise just yet. The success of Razor proved that they could tell compelling stories in a direct-to-DVD format, and further projects along those lines could very well transform the way we view DVD-only releases.
Honestly, I don't care how we get it -- I just want more BSG.
