Brett Ratner Directing "God of War"?!

God of War

Everybody's favorite Rush Hour director and X3 destroyer, Brett Ratner, may be setting his sights on Sony's epic God of War franchise according to some detective work by the guys at Film Junk. Yesterday, Ratner hinted that he would be working on video game related movies at Joystiq. Today, an interview over at Advertising Age pretty much spilled the beans on his intentions to adapt Sony's God of War.

For the rock dwellers out there, the game is about a former Spartan soldier named Kratos who is pretty much the ultimate badass. In the first game, which I assume the film will follow, he's out for revenge against the war god Aries. Along the way he encounters other major figures from Greek mythology, all the while taking names and collecting heads.

I'd still classify this as a rumor for now, but I suppose I could see Ratner tackling a God of War film. His work on X3, while never anything more than serviceable, proved to studio folks that he could direct an epic action film, and his Rush Hour series has always been pretty bankable.

Honestly, if anyone should be directing a God of War film, it should be Sam Raimi. His involvement in Hercules and Xena alone should qualify him for the work. He's obviously in love with the ancient Greek mythology, and he's proven that he has the action chops to make something grand with God of War. But of course, that would be far too good of an idea for Hollywood to run with.

For now, I can only hope this project lands in the hands of a far better director, and if there is any justice in the world, Vin Diesel will be cast as Kratos.

What say you readers?

Bret Ratner sucks!

Gavid Hood, Chris Nolan, or Spielberg should take on God Of War, not some dumb sonoffabitch like Bret Ratner. The guy sucks elephant balls, man! As for Kratos...Nathan Jones, maybe. Or some unknown who can pull off a basass role. But for Pete's sake...Bret Ratner is as good as suicide for God Of War.

Dear God of War, NO!

I'm not a massive gamer but God of War is a cinematic epoch for any medium. Apart from a major lack of decent greek mythology epics since Ray Harryhausen hung up his play doh skelletons, this could launch the genre to uncharted heights as it is such a varied and interesting concept for interpretation. If Brett n Vin get their hands on this, I will most likely boycott the whole project. I need to be convinced that they actually love and believe in the franchise before they jump on the band wagon to boost their respective, mediocre and flagging reputations.
