At a recent sci-fi convention in Australia, Firefly cast member Jewel Staite confirmed that a special edition release of the short-lived TV series is on the way. Staite mentions that she recorded commentary for the new set recently in LA. This isn't necessarily earth-shattering news; A Firefly re-release was inevitable, especially now that Blu-ray has won the high-def format war. I predict we'll see the Firefly SE set for significantly more than the current DVD release, and availability for both DVD and Blu-ray formats.
Staite also gave hope to browncoats everywhere when she made clear she still has hopes for a Serenity sequel. On this point, I would have to disagree -- I loved Serenity but the film's box office performance is most likely not goign to justify another big-screen release. Perhaps we'll see something when Firefly fans flock en masse to repurchase the new special edition set, but otherwise it's too much of a longshot in my opinion.
I think the series has a better chance resurrecting itself in the form of direct-to-DVD releases which are soon aired on television ala the Futurama comeback. There's even the possibility it could find some new media love on the internet. A big screen release though? Not bloody likely.
