It appears that Hollywood is not the only one struggling to come up with new film ideas. While we're in the midst of a remake orgy, along with adaptations of seemingly every comic book character, Japan is facing similar issues. The latest example of this is the recent announcement of Ghost in the Shell 2.0, a revamp of the original film with modern animation techniques (Read: CGI everywhere!).
I'm not entirely sure if this is better or worse news than another Ghost in the Shell sequel, but however you take it, this revival certainly seems like a cash grab. In many ways it reminds me of the Neon Genesis Evangelion "Rebuild" films which aim to retell the series' now classic storyline with modern animation and a much higher budget. But unlike Evangelion, the first Ghost film was blessed with (for its time) an exceedingly high budget and innovative CG techniques.
I'm just not entirely sure this revival is necessary. I would have rather seen a cleaned up version of the first film suited for high-definition.
