I haven't been holding out much hope for RocknRolla, Guy Ritchie's latest forray into the adrenaline-fueled British gangster action/comedy genre that he himself pioneered, but EmpireOnline.com has brought us the world exclusive trailer and now I'm singing a different tune.
This movie looks like such a vast improvement over his last couple of duds (Swept Away, Revolver), and the reason why is obvious: he's returned to his old bag of tricks. People have criticized Ritchie in the past for being a one-trick pony, and I'd have to agree, but when those tricks include Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, I am happy to enjoy another helping of Ritchie goodness. And RocknRolla looks to be just that. It's got everything we love about those films, from the oddball collection of characters to the gritty crime-laden storyline to the deadpan snappy banter.
A day ago I couldn't have cared less about this film coming out, and now I can't wait to see it. I doubt it will live up the precedent set by Ritchie's kickass one-two punch debut, but at the very least, it'll be nice to see a film from him that doesn't make you want to bludgeon yourself in the face with a rusty object.

As much as I agree with a lot of what you're saying, such as with it not being all that bad a thing that Ritchie's a one-trick pony, I think the reason he's become so harshly criticized in more recent years is that the only two films he's made outside of his comfort zone have been considered dreadful.
While there's no doubt that Ritchie has and will always have his fair share of haters, I think if he can go back to doing what he's good at in a way that doesn't undermine his previous works then people will forgive and forget about his duds. After all, look at Kevin Smith.
For now though, people will continue to be suspect.
RocknRolla
