I'm still on the fence regarding director Timur Bekmambetov, whose Russian fantasy epics Night Watch and Day Watch have been getting film geeks all hot and bothered for the past few years. I've only seen Night Watch, and while the guy certainly has a uniquely kinetic visual style, I was surprised at the awkward narrative structure and emotional emptiness of the film. So now he's doing Wanted, an adaptation of a graphic novel actioner whose latest trailer was just released today.
The first few trailers for this film left me somewhat cold, but I was struck once again by Timur's arresting visual sense and that alone kept my interest. I ended up reading the graphic novel, only to learn that it was actually a compelling look at the world of supervillainery, and not at all about a "brotherhood of assassins". As far as modern comicbook adaptations go Wanted is by far one of the most inaccurate. It's a shame too--I think a film about a world run by supervillains would have been good competition for the good-goody superhero films coming this summer.
Instead we get Angelina Jolie trying to convince us of her badassery once again, and James McAvoy looking decidedly out of place. But at least it looks pretty, right? I'll try and be somewhat optimistic, because I'm a sucker for gorgeous action films even if they are a bit dumb. We'll see how this turns out when Wanted is released on June 28th.
