It’s been argued for awhile that Ricky Gervais is a one-trick pony, always playing variations of the same exact obnoxious character. True as that observation may be though, that doesn’t make that particular character any less hilarious. Between The Office and Extras, I don’t think there’s an actor alive who’s managed to put me on the verge of tears with laughter as much as Gervais has done.
It’s sad then, that the only role Gervais knows how to do is being so utterly wasted in American cinema. After worthless bit parts in Night at the Museum and Stardust, Ricky Gervais has finally received a starring role with Ghost Town, which unfortunately doesn't look like it'll be giving his Hollywood career the boost it so sorely needs. Which isn't to say his performance looks bad; it’s the rest of the movie that does.

Is this movie giving anybody else déjà vu? Didn’t this just come out a couple of years ago in the form of a romantic comedy, Just Like Heaven? And then again after that with Over Her Dead Body? And weren’t those already clichéd imitations of much better movies?
I don’t know what’s more depressing, that movies like this keep getting made, or that I just know I won’t be able to help myself from seeing it. Damn you Ricky Gervais!
